Art from Code: My Face

DESCRIBE THE OBJECT

This work was an experiment with code in an attempt to create multiple moving parts in one image that had some type of relationship to one another. The two yellow rings constantly move around in circles while the line of smaller circles moves from top to bottom of the screen. The wall of ovals move left and right, bouncing off of the walls forever. When the small row of circles reaches the bottom of the screen, this affects the color of every object, except for the faces at the back; they remain the same color and motionless throughout, providing a stable backdrop for the moving parts.

DESCRIBE YOUR MOTIVATION IN CREATING THIS OBJECT

I wanted to incorporate a piece of art that I had previously created for an animation class as a jumping-off point to inspire my code, so I chose a still image of multiples of my face that I had animated for the background. I wanted to experiment with color as well as different types of movement, so I did just that.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS

Once I had decided on the images of my face, their color palette inspired the colors in the rest of the piece. I chose similar pink/purple colors with a contrasting yellow to stand out in the middle. I decided to create different-sized shapes to add variety to the visual composition, and I thought that having very thin lines run across the screen on top of the large masses of faces would make it more interesting to look at.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT MEAN TO YOU?

I especially like this piece because I incorporated some of my older work into it, and I had a lot of fun experimenting with code as an artistic medium.
